Justin & RachelJune 7, 2012 by Artworks Tulsa Photography | Engagement Family
Today we are featuring one of our awesome couples with a truly unique story. Sit back and marvel with us at the amazing story of Justin & Rachel and their beautiful family!
Rachel and Justin were introduced for the first time by a mutual friend on the Fourth of July, 2008. The two had an instant connection and quickly became inseparable. Rachel admits the two were saying “I love you,” by day 5, but they meant it! These two were falling for each other, fast.
Fast-forward to December 22, 2010. Rachel arrived home from work to find a suspiciously clean house, but she managed to shrug it off. She knew Justin was up to something though when he insisted on dragging her off the couch to look at the new “ornament” he bought for the tree that day. At first Rachel couldn’t figure out what ornament he was talking about, but once he convinced her to stand by the tree, he pulled out a ring box from beneath the top-hat at the top of the Christmas tree, and after kneeling and delivering a sweet speech, Justin asked Rachel to marry him. Of course she said yes!
It would be easy to envy these two for seemingly having it all, but Rachel and Justin have also dealt with heartache. At age 15, Rachel was diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis, and was told she would likely never be able to have a child. She was honest with Justin early in their relationship regarding the less than 1% chance of ever having a baby. Rachel was prepared for Justin to end things at that point as she knew he really wanted children, but he didn’t. Instead, he stood by her even when things got worse. In 2010, even after traveling to Oregon to undergo surgery with the best specialist in the country, the endometriosis came back, worse than ever. Despite the bleak outlook, Rachel and Justin made a decision to defy the odds and do everything in their power to try having a child of their own. Fertility specialists around the state warned them that in-vitro fertilization was their only chance and even that was a long shot.
The couple went through a month of counseling and medications, but soon exhaustion and frustration brought them to their breaking point. On the day that Rachel was scheduled to go in for next her appointment, she called the whole thing off. That same day, out of what she describes as “boredom,” she took a home pregnancy test, but laid it in the bathroom without even reading it; she was so sick of the same old negative results. Hours later, Justin noticed the test and said, “Have you seen this?! It’s positive!!!!” Rachel saw the positive result with her own eyes, but was still skeptical. Just to be certain, she took several more pregnancy tests and immediately scheduled a blood test, and sure enough, all results were POSITIVE! The doctor informed the couple that if the baby developed a heartbeat, which still seemed improbable, Rachel only had a 15% chance of losing the pregnancy. At six weeks they confirmed that the baby did indeed have a heartbeat. The impossible was becoming a reality! The doctors kept a close watch on Rachel, but finally on July 7th, 2011, Ava Marie was born.
Rachel and Justin have already been through so much together, but are looking forward to making their marriage official on July 14th, 2012. We are honored to be there to celebrate with them and capture the beauty of the day that has been four years in the making!
